May Gardening & Yardwork

May signals the arrival of warmer temperatures and the decline of all our cool-season flowers, herbs, and veggies. Here is my list of things to do in May:

SOW TABLE GARDEN SEEDS
  • Black-eyed Peas
  • Melons
  • Okra
PLANT HERB GARDEN
  • Basil (multiple scents, colors, and flavors)

SOW FLOWER SEEDS THAT ATTRACT BUTTERFLIES AND POLLINATORS
  • Blanket Flower (gaillardia)
  • Cosmos
  • Mexican Hat
  • Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia)
  • Sunflower
  • Zinnia
TRANSPLANT DESERT-ADAPTED
  • Trees
  • Shrubs
  • Ground Covers
  • Vines
  • Cacti
  • Succulents
MAINTENANCE
  • Adjust to summer irrigation settings
  • Add mulch 2-3 inches deep around plants, but keep a few inches away from trunks and stems to prevent disease.
  • Check all sprinklers, bubblers and emitters to make sure they are not broken or clogged and are spraying the right direction.
