May signals the arrival of warmer temperatures and the decline of all our cool-season flowers, herbs, and veggies. Here is my list of things to do in May:
SOW TABLE GARDEN SEEDS
- Black-eyed Peas
- Melons
- Okra
PLANT HERB GARDEN
- Basil (multiple scents, colors, and flavors)
SOW FLOWER SEEDS THAT ATTRACT BUTTERFLIES AND POLLINATORS
- Blanket Flower (gaillardia)
- Cosmos
- Mexican Hat
- Mexican Sunflower (Tithonia rotundifolia)
- Sunflower
- Zinnia
TRANSPLANT DESERT-ADAPTED
- Trees
- Shrubs
- Ground Covers
- Vines
- Cacti
- Succulents
MAINTENANCE
- Adjust to summer irrigation settings
- Add mulch 2-3 inches deep around plants, but keep a few inches away from trunks and stems to prevent disease.
- Check all sprinklers, bubblers and emitters to make sure they are not broken or clogged and are spraying the right direction.
